Founder & CEO, EverlyWell; landed one of the largest deals in Shark Tank history
When preparing for a presentation, think about what the audience wants to learn. So much of a good presentation is the audience thinking they learned something, or that they were entertained.
For TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield, I had six minutes onstage to pitch EverlyWell and go through a live product demo for thousands of people in the audience and 30,000 people watching online. This was not a presentation to fly by the seat of your pants. To be sure I could deliver, I flew out to San Francisco two days early and practiced the presentation over and over again while recording it on my iPhone. You have to rehearse the speech enough times that it becomes natural—much like how professional athletes practice, watch tape, and adjust. I was up first, and I delivered confidently, even over the noise of the construction crew setting up and the twenty other entrepreneurs I was competing against.
I was convinced after TechCrunch that I could handle any public speaking engagement, until Shark Tank came along. Shark Tank is a great example of how important Q&As are in a presentation. While the prepared pitch is only ninety seconds, you have to be ready to think on your feet and overcome your nerves—and know that anything you say can be used for national TV. Often when you watch presentations with Q&As, you’ll notice that speakers present and then become very casual with the question-and-answer portion. This is an opportunity to shine and reiterate your key points.
Speaking is simply storytelling, and it will become natural with practice and opportunity. Make your key points in your own speaking style, and learn to speak naturally. Some of the tips and tricks like “power posing” may not work for you, which is why just doing it is the best way to learn your own style. Eventually, you can be your authentic self and feel like you are just talking to your group of friends, telling a story about your weekend.
